Duke University School of Law

Since 1993, a major component of our practice has been the design of college and university facilities. In the past 15 years, we have completed more than 50 academic projects; 80 percent of these have been for repeat clients.

Our approach acknowledges the importance of a wide range of design disciplines: landscape architecture, campus/urban design, architecture, interior and graphic design. Above all, it is contextual. Each campus has a unique identity created, not only by the characteristics of its buildings, but by the physical and visual relationships between them. We continually search for appropriate balances between external and internal influence, contextual and programmatic demands, collective and singular conditions.

How does technology affect teaching, learning, and the exchange of information? How should universities take care of their aging facilities and infrastructures? How should they plan for intense demographic growth and change? How can infill strategies respect the existing campus fabric without denying the contemporary nature of a project? The questions we ask and lessons we learn from each project add to our understanding of the campus as a complex urban environment with many different users and a constantly shifting population. Though each project is unique, understanding the broader social, economic, environmental, and technological issues enriches and informs our response of every project.
